First, make sure your Pi packages are up to date.

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

Then, install the Motion package.

sudo apt-get install motion

Now, you will have to go thru the config file and get you configuration set up.  Here is a copy of what I am running right now.  A couple of key things to make it work:
  • daemon on - if this is left off, then you will not have control of your pi after you start motion.  Daemon mode lets it run as a service in the background.
  • The resolution you choose has to match an available resolution from your camera
Here is a list of the options and what they do.

Now that the config file is ready, run the program.

sudo motion

If it is not how you want it, change the config file, and restart motion.

sudo service motion restart

This restarts Motion and allows it to read in the config file again.
