Done...Let me know if you find any broken links or any that link back to the old web pages
2  Projects / WebSite Development / Re: Time for a revamp on: October 28, 2015, 02:27:53 AM
...I think that's everything.  I will convert everything over this weekend (Oct 31/Nov 1) unless I get a request for a change or a request to hold off on converting it over...don't forget that the new pages should be mobile phone/tablet compatible so you can test them that way as well
3  Projects / WebSite Development / Re: Time for a revamp on: October 02, 2015, 01:49:39 AM
The test pages now refer back to themselves .. i.e. clicking on the Barntek logo on the new Archives page will bring you back to the bootstrap home page... Also, the bulletin board and gallery links on the test pages work now
4  Projects / WebSite Development / Time for a revamp on: October 02, 2015, 12:30:25 AM
The whole site is changing! I'll be updating all the web pages on the site during the next few days/weeks to make them look nicer and to make them more "mobile device" friendly...I will let you all know when I'm ready to change everything over...In the interim, I'll post links to the pages that I've updated so you can look and comment...

Please use this thread for comments and suggestions for improvements over what I've done ("Looks like crap" would not be a very helpful comment, tell me WHY it looks like crap)...Also, check it out on your iPhones/Androids/iPads to make sure it translates well

Here are the ones I've done so far:

Home page
Near Space Basics
Archives Page
Balloon 2015
Balloon 2007
Balloon 2008 (including Dan's Writeup)
Balloon 2009 dwb writeup is in progress but you can see the "progress-so-far" when you click the button (**Finished!**)
DWB writeup
Balloon 2010
Balloon 2014
...and finally, the links page

2015 page has been updated and current with the info that I have.  If you have anything to add, whether it be newsy items or data files or pictures or all of the above, let me know or send it to me (or update it yourself if you want, don't forget the new login for ftp)
6  Projects / WebSite Development / Re: Changeover Complete on: July 15, 2015, 05:27:00 PM
One change you'll notice with the new website is the login for ftp....If you're gonna log in as admin, it's still the same login name but you have to include at the end of it...password is still the same as well

Our website has been successfully switched over to new servers at the provider.  The old website will still be available until the end of June 2015 just in case we forgot something or left something out.  As you're going through the pages here, please let me know asap if you find something not quite right so I can at least compare side by side with the old site and see if I can come up with a solution.

Ok, got my new GPS (which works fine btw) and finished the coding to pass data to the tracking server.  It actually looks pretty good.  I was moving the tracking package around the yard and then I could compare where the package actually was in comparison to where it was reporting itself by zooming in and clicking on the satellite imaging.  Most tracks were within 20 feet of the actual position.  I can upload the software to Larry's pi but I'll need to bring the tracking package up so we can test it, right?

I will continue to park the tracking page back at Larry's when I finish testing

Ok, should work in landscape now too
10  Projects / 2015 Balloon Projects / Re: Tracking Page on: May 27, 2015, 08:38:41 PM
The web page on the server is up and running.  It's pulling it's information from a small text file, but it's test data so while I did make it point to the actual launch site, the rest of the numbers are made up. I'll be working on having the Pi build the file and ftp it up automatically the rest of the day.  Once that's done, you will probably see me walking around my yard while I'm testing.  When I'm done testing, I will re-park the marker back at the launch site.

Please look at it and let me know if the zoom level is ok.  I chose that particular one because you can see the names of the smaller roads and that would be handy when we're chasing.  You can use the zoom controls to go in or out but it will revert to the original zoom level every time the page reloads.  I plan to have it auto-reload every 60 seconds, so that should be ample time for someone wanting to zoom in or out to check where they are in relation to the balloon.

Next thing is if you have a smart phone, could you load up the site and see how it translates.  It looked ok on my iPad but I'm thinking I will probably want to remove the Barntek header across the top on the smaller screens.
11  Projects / 2015 Balloon Projects / Tracking Page on: May 27, 2015, 04:28:55 AM
I've started building a tracking page on the web site.  This will allow people without access to APRS to track the balloon in near real-time.  The page will display a map (Google Maps) with a pin denoting the balloon's position and an information window will be available (by clicking on the pin) providing the balloon's geographical position, time, altitude, speed and direction.  The page will refresh itself every minute so all you have to do it access the website on your iphone or android and drive to where the balloon is.  That's the plan anyway.  If you want to check on the progress, it's at  I will provide a link via the menu once I get it up and running.

I was thinking I would bring the setup to the launch site since it would be closer to the landing site and may be able to get more tracking positions than from my house.

Larry: do you have power for a radio, tnc and Pi near an internet hookup?

Will the GPS connect directly to the Pi pins or will you have to convert the 5v output to 3.3v?
13  Projects / WebSite Development / 2015 page is up on: May 20, 2015, 03:35:07 PM
I have the 2015 page framed out and up on the website...The menu bar across the top was starting to get a little long, so I archived all the old missions to an "Archives" page so don't panic if you don't see the old's still there

Even if I don't use Samba, I learned that you can paste text into PuTTY using right-click with the mouse...another cool tip, if the copy you command ends with a CRLF (End of Line) it will run the command as soon as you do the mouse click...Cool!

I found a cool project...I'm about halfway done with it, as in, I've got the receive side working but haven't built the PTT/xmit data part yet...The program is called Direwolf and the particulars and downloads are here...Once I get Direwolf transmitting and digipeating, I'm gonna try to write a little terminal program and see if I can interface with it...If I can do that, we should be able to use the guts of the terminal program to pass APRS data and pretty much anything else we want through it...If you want to play with it, I have some notes of some of the problems (and fixes) I ran into, let me know and I can send it to you or post it here
